The Story of St Valentine

The History of Valentine's Day:

Emperor Claudius was a war-waging tyrant in the 3rd Century, who found himself running out of soliders.  He believed that men did not want to fight because of their wives and children, and so banned marriage.

Valentine was a priest who could not suppress his strong belief in love.  He therefore performed marriage ceremonies in secret for soldiers before they were sent off for war.

Eventually, Valentine was discovered and sentenced to death.  Whilst in jail he fell in love with the blind daughter of his jailer.  He cured her blindness with his love and signed his last note to her 'From your Valentine'.  He was subjected to a three part execution by beating, stoning and decapitation.

He battled and lost his life for marriage and love, and so was made Saint Valentine.
